Abstract: The paper dwells on studying different approaches to formalization of language. It analyzes the semantic and syntactic theory of formal semantics, as well as the underlying principle of this scientific field – the compositionality principle. Special attention is paid to defining key terms, actively used in the framework of formal semantics: the lambda-abstraction, lambda-conversion, functional application, etc.
